Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act


In accordance with the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act, St. Teresa's Academy provides education to students about appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on the Internet and cyberbullying awareness and response.

St. Teresa's Academy has services in place that proactively monitor and alert appropriate staff to student activities that are related, but not limited, to bullying and self harm.  This type of proactive monitoring continues to work even when a student's device is not on campus.

Please keep in mind that the services St. Teresa's Academy uses to help protect students, while robust, are just software and are not a replacement for adult guidance and supervision.

Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA)


In accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), St. Teresa's Academy has in place a filtering service on all school-owned computers, including all student devices that are capable of accessing the Internet.  When installed, the filter service shall remain active and follow the device wherever it may go, whether it may be on or off campus.  The filter shall protect or deny access to students as defined in CIPA below:

  • Access by minors to inappropriate matter on the Internet;
  • Access to visual depictions that are obscene or are harmful to minors;
  • The safety and security of minors when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications;
  • Unauthorized access, including so-called “hacking,” and other unlawful activities by minors online;
  • Unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal information regarding minors; and
  • Measures restricting minors' access to materials harmful to them.

The final decision on which categories of content and websites to be filtered shall be made by St. Teresa's Academy.  Principles of academic freedom shall be considered when deciding what shall be filtered.

Requests to Unblock Content

Currently blocked websites may be unblocked in certain circumstances for anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • Educational purposes – there is educational material being blocked by the filtering system.
  • Staff-related purposes – a staff member needs a website unblocked related to their job (such as purchasing, law enforcement, bona fide research).

Any person requesting to have a site unblocked should submit a formal request with the appropriate form by clicking here. The request must include:

  • Website address (URL) to be unblocked.
  • Explanation of purpose for unblocking the site (refer to criteria above), including class and teacher credentials when applicable.
  • Electronic signature based on login credentials.

The site will be unblocked and notification of approval will be sent if the request is deemed appropriate to the criteria mentioned above, does not violate CIPA, and if there is no threat to the network or resources.  If a request to unblock a website is denied, then a notification will be provided as to why the request was denied.

The school shall periodically review filtered content and make any recommendations and adjustments as needed.  This may include blocking categories or websites that were previously available.

Device Protection & Monitoring


Every device that St. Teresa's Academy maintains has software installed to help protect and monitor the usage and health of the device.  This includes methods of detecting, isolating, and removing virus and malware attacks.  We also utilize technology that allows faculty and staff to monitor student device usage while on campus, including ways of seeing what they are doing on their computer at a given time.  This particular type of monitoring does not work off campus, and has no access to any device's camera.
